What & Why

The Science of UV-C

UV-C is ultraviolet germicidal light generated from the sun or bulb. It has a wavelength range of 260 nanometers, which research has proven disrupts the DNA of infectious pathogens. UV-C light causes damage to the nucleic acid of these microorganisms, hindering their ability to survive or spread infection.

what is UVGI?

UV-C light works in HVAC systems through a process called ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI), which utilizes ultraviolet C (UVC) rays to kill or inactivate microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and mold. In addition to cleaner air, this solution also aids in the cleaning of your HVAC systems overtime, reducing maintenance and energy costs.

How UV-C Is Applied in HVAC

There are two main types of UV-C installations within HVAC systems:

Coil Sanitizing Lights:

These are placed near the evaporator coil, a component that is especially prone to mold and bacterial growth due to its cool and moist environment. The UV-C light targets and kills microbes growing on the coil, preventing them from entering the air stream and also improving the coil’s efficiency by keeping it clean.

Air Sanitizing Lights:

Installed within the ductwork or air handlers, these UV-C lights target airborne pathogens as air moves through the HVAC system. This disinfects the circulating air, reducing the risk of spreading respiratory viruses, bacteria, and mold spores throughout the building.

Effectiveness and Safety of Ultra Violet Lights

The effectiveness of UV-C lights depends on several factors, including placement, duration of exposure, and lamp power. For maximum impact, UV-C lamps must be installed correctly to ensure that air or surfaces are sufficiently exposed. These lights can reduce the presence of pathogens in the air and on surfaces by up to 90%+, according to research studies.

UV-C lights used in HVAC systems are safe when properly installed, as they are contained within the system. Direct exposure to UVC rays is harmful to humans; therefore, proper installation and maintenance by trained professionals are essential.

There are no known pathogens that UV-C does not destroy.

Benefits of UV-C

UV-C kills up to 90%+ of surface and airborne pathogens. What does this mean for you?

  • Reduction of illness and absenteeism
  • Eliminates annual HVAC maintenance cleaning
  • Improved indoor air quality
  • Prolong the life of air handling equipment
  • Energy savings
  • Micro-vapors containing harmful pathogens that naturally rise to the ceiling via our breath
  • Air-containing pathogens are sucked into the return of the unit
  • Harmful pathogens pass through the UV-C system inside the unit
  • Each UV-C system is engineered to kill 99% of all airborne pathogens as the air passes through it
  • A room averages 4-6 air exchanges per hour, effectively killing all airborne pathogens every 10-15 minutes
  • UV-C systems installed inside HVAC systems keep coils clean, increase efficiency, and lower energy consumption
